The Church of Ss. Cyril and Methodius

Parish Church

The church is relatively new, from the year 2000. The corner-stone was consecrated on April 22, 1990 by Pope John Paul II during his visit of Slovakia. The consecration of the church was performed on November 4, 2000 by Mons. Ján Sokol, Bratislava – Trnava metropolitan archbishop.

The church is hidden in the greenery and only the belfry which is detached suggests its presence from the street.

The church building with irregular floor plan has a sloping ceiling with illuminated steel joist. From the point of view of architecture a wide choir loft dominates, with two exits from the interior of the church while the third one is from the exterior through the pillar and overhead passage to the chancel steps. The fourth entrance to the choir loft is from the vicarage (later on, the entrance was walled up). Large areas of walls are divided with flat pilasters. The author of the whole complex of buildings is Ing. arch. Martin Bišťan from Ružomberok.

The simple church space is decorated with objects reminding of the past. In the church there is the altar of the Holy Trinity from 1630 – the oldest altar of the deanery. It is a late-Renaissance altar of epitaphor type. The tabernacle is newly-built. The Palatine Mikuláš Esterházy and his wife, countess Kristina Nyari were its donators. In the upper part, a veronica is depicted. The recent history of the altar is also mentioned in the letter of thanks of former parish priest for the architect Chmelár.

Another sight is comprised of fourteen paintings of the Stations of the Cross by painter and caricaturist Augustín Eduard Meissel who came from Pezinok. He was 21 years old when he started to paint the Way of the Cross in 1888 and it took him three years to finish it. From artistic point of view it is interesting that some characters have caricature features.

The altar as well as the Way of the Cross were renovated by Ľ. Chmelár Liturgiaservis Company. The altar was being restored in the years 1998 – 2000 and the Stations of the Cross were being restored in the period 2002 – 2003.

Since 2008 there is also the Picture of Padre Pio in the church.

The premises of the church include also the parish office and the pastoral centre whose completion has been stopped because of lack of finance.
